A modern lure designed for fishing you can see, the ZXY 4.5″, developed by Takuma Hata, features a unique square cross-section refined through extensive testing.
The Golden Ratio That Comes Alive Underwater
The ZXY features precisely engineered flat surfaces created around a specific “Golden Ratio” of its X, Y, and Z dimensions. These surfaces catch and displace water, directly influencing the lure’s action and producing a seductive, lifelike movement.
Its highly visible presentation allows anglers to track the lure, watch its movement, and see the strike happen—adding an entirely visual dimension to the fishing experience.
The shape of the ZXY was developed through extensive prototype testing, with particular focus placed on the relationship between the bait’s X, Y, and Z dimensions.
Prototype after prototype was created and tested, with dimensions adjusted in increments as small as 0.5 mm. Even the smallest changes affected how the bait interacted with the water, allowing Hata to fine-tune its balance, movement, and overall performance.
Testing ultimately revealed an ideal proportion—a “Golden Ratio” between the X, Y, and Z dimensions.
The highly successful 3.5″ prototype became the foundation for the final design. Its proportions were carried into the larger 4.5″ ZXY, providing the added casting distance and presence of a larger bait while maintaining the action and balance discovered during development.
Named by GACKT
The name “ZXY” was chosen by the renowned Japanese artist GACKT—who is also a fishing companion of Takuma Hata.
GACKT personally tested the prototype during its development; inspired by Hata’s intense focus on the X, Y, and Z axes, he decided to name the product by rearranging the letters “XYZ” into “ZXY.”
DESIGNED FOR MULTIPLE PRESENTATIONS
A small round marker molded into the upper center of the ZXY provides an easy reference point for precise hook placement, particularly when rigging the bait wacky style.
Weightless Wacky Rig
Rigged weightless and wacky style, the ZXY takes advantage of its flat surfaces to create a distinctive “Yoko-Yoko” side-to-side gliding action. Subtle rod movements bring the bait to life while keeping the presentation highly visible to the angler.
Weightless Offset Rig
Rigged weightless on an offset hook, the ZXY’s flat belly catches water as it falls. The bait gently sways from side to side while descending head-first, creating a natural swimming and falling action—even without added rod movement.
Jig Head / Mid-Strolling
The ZXY can also be paired with a round-style jig head for mid-strolling presentations. Its flat-sided body responds to subtle rod and line movements, creating controlled rolling and swimming action through the water column.
